Improvements in reproductive performance have increased litter sizes, but this has resulted in greater birthweight variability and more small and non-viable piglets. And the increase in prolificacy has not been accompanied by an increase in the amount of colostrum produced by the sow, so smaller piglets are at an immediate disadvantage. Supplementation of sow diets with Carnitol-L for the last 4 weeks of gestation significantly increases live born piglet birthweights.
