Role purpose

At Huvepharma's headquarters in Sofia, Bulgaria, a new position has arisen for a Country Tax Manager - Bulgaria, reporting to the Global Tax Director. In this role, you will be responsible for all tax related matters in relation to all legal entities in Bulgaria and foreign rep offices which includes all tax compliance in relation to CIT, VAT, WHT and transfer pricing documentation. In this role you are expected to take ownership of the tax compliance processes, tax planning, preparation of supporting documentation and drive tax automation initiatives within the Bulgarian organisation. You will be the primary tax contact for Accounting, Finance and Controlling in Bulgaria and you will work closely with the Global Tax Director on global initiatives.

 

Core responsibilities

1. Corporate Income Tax (CIT)

  • Prepare, review, and submit annual corporate income tax returns and advance/estimated corporate income tax declarations in compliance with Bulgarian legislation.
  • Perform monthly and annual corporate income tax calculations, including:
    • Detailed book-to-tax reconciliations
    • Identification, analysis and documentation of permanent and temporary tax differences
  • Calculate, record and reconcile:
    • Current corporate income tax charges
    • Deferred tax assets and deferred tax liabilities in line with IFRS requirements
  • Maintain comprehensive tax calculation files, fully reconciled to:
    • Trial balances
    • IFRS and statutory financial statements
  • Coordinate with Big4 global tax advisors all material, significant and complex matters, while retaining full internal ownership, review, and accountability for tax computations and filings

 

2. VAT compliance (Bulgarian and foreign VAT)

  • Review and submit monthly VAT returns, ledgers and VIES declarations
  • Perform detailed reconciliations between accounting records (Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012) and VAT filings
  • Verify the correct VAT treatment of transactions, including: 
    • Domestic supplies
    • Intra-EU transactions
    • Export transactions (including 0% supplies typical for Huvepharma)
  • Manage monthly VAT recovery processes in accordance with Bulgarian VAT regulations
  • Ensure completeness, consistency and auditability of VAT documentation, maintained in SharePoint and Loctax
  • Perform in-depth VAT control, including:
    • VAT ledger to general ledger reconciliations
    • Logical and arithmetic validations
    • Consistency checks against sales, inventory, and customs data
  • Oversee foreign VAT registrations and compliance (e.g., Netherlands, France, Italy, UK, Japan where applicable), including coordination and consolidation of data provided to external service providers
  • Record and reconcile foreign VAT balances in the accounting system
  • Support VAT audits, inspections, and refund procedures, including preparation of supporting documentation and responses to tax authorities

3. Withholding taxes (WHT)

  • Manage compliance with withholding tax obligations under:
    • Article 55 of the Personal Income Tax Act
    • Article 201 of the Corporate Income Tax Act
    • Article 142 of the Social Security Procedure Code
  • Review contracts, payments, and transactions to identify and assess withholding tax exposure
  • Coordinate the application of double tax treaties, including:
    • Collection and validation of certificates of tax residency
    • Maintenance of supporting documentation
    • Maintain accurate withholding tax trackers, working papers, and audit trails

 

4. Transfer pricing and group tax support

  • Support transfer pricing compliance for Huvepharma EOOD, including:
    • Review, challenge, and finalise the Local File prepared by external advisors
    • Ensure consistency between transfer pricing documentation, accounting records, and actual transactions
  • Support country-by-country reporting and other group tax reporting requirements as applicable
  • Prepare an annual tax summary for management, covering:
    • Key legislative and regulatory developments
    • Identified tax risks and exposures
    • Status and outcomes of tax audits
    • Material and non-routine transactions with tax implications

 

5. Tax accounting, controls and audit readiness

  • Record all tax-related journal entries in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012
  • Ensure tax balances are reconciled fully and accurately on a monthly basis
  • Maintain tax documentation in line with Huvepharma internal tax manuals, policies, and SharePoint documentation standards. Ensure continuous readiness for:
    • External financial audits
    • Tax inspections by local authorities
    • Group-level reviews and internal controls assessments

 

Systems and Tools

  • Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 - tax postings, data extraction
  • Excel (advanced) - tax models, reconciliations, trackers
  • SharePoint / Loctax - tax documentation and audit trail
  • Workiva / Cognos / TM1 - alignment with Group reporting (as required)

 

Qualifications and profile

  • Degree in Tax Law and/or Economics
  • 5-8+ years of hands-on tax experience (in-house and/or tax advisory) with deep knowledge of Bulgarian VAT, CIT and WHT legislation
  • Strong accountancy background
  • Demonstrated ability to manage compliance, attention to detail, structured working style, strong ownership mindset
  • Good in English (written and oral)
