New NSP enzyme in broiler production

Using enzyme matrix values to lower the environmental impact of broiler production by reformulating the feed

By Robert Serwata and Stefaan Bekaert

There is a push in the EU to reduce dependency on imported soya and expand circular economy practices in livestock production. Imported soya - especially from South America - is in many cases linked to deforestation and biodiversity loss. The livestock sector, and broiler production in particular, is heavily reliant on these raw materials for feed production. The core idea behind more sustainable production is to have more local protein autonomy and to increase the valorisation of by-products in livestock systems.

Recently, Huvepharma® received EU approval for the use of a new non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) enzyme with three labelled fibre-degrading actives (two cellulases and a xylanase) in feed. This new and unique NSP enzyme allows animals to unlock more of the potential nutritional value present in the feed formulation. It also enables the nutritionist to formulate high-performing diets in a more cost-effective way by using raw materials that contain more fibre than otherwise possible.

At Warmia University in Poland, a broiler study was initiated to demonstrate the potential impact of this new NSP enzyme on raw material selection, feed cost and whether a significant environmental improvement could be achieved.

Feed rations* were reformulated using a latest-generation 6-phytase from Huvepharma®, resulting in complete elimination of inorganic phosphorus, and saving additional energy (-95 kCal ME) and crude protein (-2%), without compromising technical results. The reformulation of the feed was achieved by reducing soybean products (oil, soybean meal) and adding more fibre- and protein-rich products (sunflower, rapeseed). Ingredients were priced at the local market price at the time of the trial and serve as an indication. The environmental impact was calculated using Nuvio Planet® software and was limited to carbon footprint and eutrophication (terrestrial and freshwater).

Table 1 presents the results of a broiler trial where the feed ration was reformulated using full matrix values for the Huvepharma® enzymes.

Discussion

The results of this trial demonstrate that diet reformulation using the matrix values of both enzymes can reduce the cost of 1 kg body weight in broilers by at least 2-3 euro cents (€0.02-0.03) without affecting broiler production parameters.

At a high dosage of phytase (2000 FTU) it is possible to eliminate inorganic phosphorus from the grower and finisher stages of broiler feeds without impacting technical performance. The new NSP enzyme allowed replacing soybean products with high-fibre, high-protein European-based raw materials such as whole rapeseed, rapeseed meal and sunflower meal, without a negative impact on performance.

From an environmental perspective, the application of both enzymes resulted in a significant reduction of the carbon footprint (up to 13%), terrestrial (up to 12%) and freshwater eutrophication (up to 23%) compared to the control formulation.

Conclusion

The combination of a high dose of a high-performing 6-phytase with the new NSP enzyme is a very cost-effective tool to improve the environmental footprint of broiler production. This combination of enzymes enables greater use of fibre-rich raw materials and a reduction in the amount of soyabean products in the feed formulation without affecting technical performance. This offers great opportunities in helping the broiler industry to lower the environmental impact of production, and it increases the valorisation of fibre-rich, EU-grown raw materials, contributing to the circular economy for European broiler production.
