The Huvepharma team made its contribution to the Poultry Council by giving presentations on the usage of histoBloc (paromomycin) in the conditions of an outbreak of Histomonas meleagridis in a commercial turkey farm. MIC values were determined for Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Enterococcus cecorum and Gallibacterium species in relation to tilmicosin and tiamulin by using a novel MIC test strip. Performance evaluation of various anticoccidials, rotation programs and supplementation periods in controlling the disease in broilers in a challenging model in floor pens was conducted.

Changing Strategies of Poultry Production - A Global Prospective

Global broiler meat production is forecast to increase upto 75 million tons in 2011. This growth is expected to be driven by Latin America and Asia, which will reach new historic production levels in the coming years. Asia in 2015 will represent more than 60 percent of the global population, more than 35 percent of global chicken consumption, which is going to create some newer challenges of production, marketing, processing & farm management.

Osler Desouzart is presently a member of the Advisory Board of the World Agriculture Forum and has spent most of his professional life in international marketing of meat, having worked for the largest pork and poultry industries in Brazil (Sadia & Perdigão) heading their Foreign Trade Departments.

Food Safety: An Essential Element of Food Production Norms

Food safety is now one of the most urgent issues that confront both Asia as a region, as well as the international community as a whole. Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned over food quality and safety arising from the globalization of trade in food. Along with support from international institutions in the region, the Industry can now take a more proactive role addressing food safety concerns, reducing significant threats to public health and well being, and the long-term economic and social fallout. All these factors are essential for making Indian Poultry Industry as one of the key players for international trade of its products.

Dr. Kanora has completed his doctorate in veterinary medicine from University of Ghent in Belgium in 1987 and his diplomate title in 2010 in the ECPHM. His area of work has been in "Human Food Safety". He has done extensive work in poultry & pig meat production in context to food safety.

In India, there are healthy signs of transformation in agriculture and allied activities in last few decades. Agripreneurs have come to realise the importance of quality changes and value addition in agriculture. Prof. Shinghi provided excellent information on how agri-business has opened new vistas for growth and development of the rural economy in general and of the agrarian economy in particular.

Prof. P M Shinghi after completing his PhD from the University of Illinois, was engaged in teaching and research for 32 years at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He was also the Dean as well as the Officiating Director of this Institute.

On the 2nd and final day of the Int'l Veterinary Symposium, organized by Huvepharma, the focus was on new insights in pig and poultry diseases, and how to deal with the changing international agri markets, which concerns farmers and veterinarians.

C. perfringens in broilers

Dr. Anouk Lanckriet from Belgium talked about C. perfringens that poses a continuing challenge for the poultry industry. She explained that C. perfringens is a worldwide economic problem, causing acute Necrotic Enteritis that in turn causes a sudden increase of flock mortality (30-50%).

However, C. perfringens strains differ in the type of toxins they produce and also in the amount of toxins they shred. A study on broiler farms in Belgium showed that in the 63 isolated they got from these farms, all belonged to the toxinotype A: alpha toxin. Lanckriet said that besides this common alpha toxin, a new toxin was discovered 2 years ago: the netB toxin. Studies with this toxin showed that deletion of the netB gene in virulant strain caused reduced virulance of the virus. However, netB negative strains were also found in Necrotic Enteritis positive birds.

Anouk also mentioned a survey conducted in the UK in 2001 where a strong correlation between the history of coccidiosis and the prevalence of Necrotic Enteritis was found. Another factor that has been shown to influence the presence of Necrotic Enteritis is the stocking density. A study showed that the disease was more present in birds that were kept at a stocking density of 30kg/m² compared to chickens that were housed at 15kg/m².

According to new EU rules, stocking density can be maximum 33kg/m², with an increase to 39 or 42kg/m² if certain standards are met. Anouk said that this could create problems regarding Necrotic Enteritis if other measures are not put in place - such as alternatives to AGPs, such as organic acids, essential oils or probiotics.

An agri market lecture

Osler Desouzart from Brazil gave a lively presentation about the current and future agri markets. World leadership in animal production is open, but who will win? He said that there is enough food on the planet, but the way and what we consume is changing rapidly. He mentioned that if people earn more money (mostly in Asia), the consumption of animal protein goes up and they shift from eating vegetable protein to meat. He said that the future of the food industry is therefore in the hands of the ones that don't eat enough.

Dose calculator for veterinarians

In his final comments of the symposium, Alain Kanora - Global marketing Director & International Sales Director Affiliates for Huvepharma - introduced the dose calculator https://veterinary.huvepharma.com/calculators/select that can be used by pig and poultry vets. This tool - looking like a normal calculator - can be used to calculate the correct dose of medication for the animals in mg/ kg body weight. It can be used for every medicated premix and veterinary drugs from all companies. Every veterinarian present at the symposium received such calculator, and with the slogan "precision pays", the organization can look back on a very successful first symposium.

Natural proteins dictating the future

The unfavorable effect of the Negative Energy Balance on pig fertility and performance has been studied in depth and is largely documented in multiple academic circles.  Various forms of metabolic stress reduce the capacity of the liver cells to produce its normal endocrine metabolic peptides and related functions.  Low levels hereof can cause impaired fertility, retarded growth, impaired feed conversion and reduced immunity.  Lianol® administration supports the capacity of the liver to produce the necessary and needed physiological metabolic peptides.  All this results in a better natural immunity, enhanced natural heat, shorter weaning to insemination period and reduced number of empty days in sows, all inducing a better and restored liver function and metabolism.

More piglets, more benefit

With the benefits of Lianol® use in sows confirmed, the effect on the piglets was also studied.  It was found that the litters of Lianol® treated sows were not only larger, they also produced more weaned piglets and mortality levels were considerably lower than untreated sows.  Detailed results will be presented at the International Porcine Veterinary Society (IPVS) 2010, Vancouver.

Range addition

The combination of these findings with improved piglet immunity levels, higher milk production in sows, optimal standing heat, less empty days and even an increased boar libido and higher seamen quality was convincing enough for Huvepharma to include Lianol® in its broad world-wide available product range and to provide these product benefits to customers.  Next to the obtained results in pig production, Huvepharma is supporting research to develop use of Lianol® for other species.
