PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION

Praziquantel induces anthelmintic effect (anticestodal and to certain extent also antitrematodal). It exerts an anticestodal action against some cestodes (tapeworms) which inhabit mainly the digestive tract of cats – Diphyllobothrium latum, Dipylidium caninum (sexually mature forms), Spirometra erinacei europei, Mesocestoides lineatus, Hydatigera taeniaeformis, Taenia hydatigena, as well as antitrematodal action against trematodes (flukes) - Opisthorchis felineus, Alaria alata. Abamectin is an endectocide which affects both internal and external parasites - it induces anthelmintic (antinematodal) and antiarthropodal effect (insecticidal and acaricidal against parasitizing insects and ticks) in cats. Its antinematodal effect is directed against roundworms, and the antiarthropodal – against blood and fluid sucking insects – Ctenocephalides cati (feline flea), C. canis (canine flea), Pulex irritans (human flea), Dipelatonema reconditum, Felicola subrostratus (cat lice), and ticks - Notoedres cati, Otodectes cynotis, Cheyletiella blakei, Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor reticulatus, etc. The effect of praziquantel is based on suppression of fumarate reductase in the myofibril membranes and neuro-muscular synapses, as a result of which paralysis and death of helminths occur. Abamectin stimulates the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), hindering the transmission of nerve impulses, which causes paralysis of nematodes, insects and ticks. The two active substances of the preparation complement each other’s action, thereby providing a wider antiparasitic effect.
