Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a bacteriocidal static effect mainly against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., a number of Proteus and Pseudomonas strains, Staphylococci, beta-hemolytic Streptococci, Corynebacteria, Mycoplasma, etc.). It is quickly absorbed from the injection site and is retained in the blood and tissues for 12 – 24 h. It is eliminated unchanged in the urine, where its concentrations significantly exceed those in the blood.
For treatment of respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, endometritis, colibacillosis, salmonellosis, infected wounds, pyodermia sepsis, etc.), caused by gentamicin-sensitive microorganisms.
In cases of continuous administration in higher doses the preparation may cause heavy nephritis and damages of the vestibular and hearing organs, especially in cats. If ataxia and vomiting occur, the treatment must be terminated.
Intramuscularly, subcutaneously, orally and intrauterinally.
