Abamectin is an avermectin endectocide inducing an anthelmintic (antinematodal) effect on endoparasites and antiarthropodal (insecticidal and acaricidal - against parasitizing insects and ticks) effect on ectoparasites in small ruminants.
Abamectin stimulates the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which suppresses the transmission of nerve impulses, as a result of which paralysis and death of nematodes, insects and ticks occur. It does not pass through the blood-brain barrier in warm-blooded animals. Closantel sodium is a salicylanilide derivative. It can also be assigned to the group of endectocides because it exerts anthelmintic (antitrematodal and antinematodal), and antiarthropodal (insecticidal and acaricidal on parasitizing insects) effect on endo- and ectoparasites in small ruminants. The mechanism of its action on Fasciola spp. is based on interruption of oxidative phosphorylation with suppression of the activity of succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase. It binds to plasma albumins and is excreted slowly in bile. It exerts a long-lasting protective effect on sheep (up to 30-40 days against Ostertagia spp. and Haemonchus spp.). The combination of abamectin and closantel induces a stronger and wider antiparasitic effect on Trematodes (liver fluke) - Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica (adult forms - 97-100%; larval forms - 6- to 8-week - 91-95%; larval - 5-week - 91%); on gastrointestinal and lung Nematodes (lungworms) - blood-sucking Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta (including their inhibited larval stage); on their benzimidazole-resistant strains; on Chabertia ovina, Strongyloides papillosus, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis (adult forms), Cooperia annulata, Oesophagostomum dentatum, O. columbianum, Nematodirus spathiger, N. filicollis, Trichuris ovis, Dictyocaulus filaria (adult forms and fourth stage larvae), Protostrongylus rufescens (adult forms). It also reveals an antinematodal activity against Cystocaulus ocreatus and Muellerius capillaris. It induces insecticidal effect against warbles -Oestrus ovis (all larval stages), Hypoderma silenus (Przhevalskiana silena - in goats), against sheep ked - Melophagus ovinus, as well as acaricidal effect in invasions of pasture ticks and mange mites - Psoroptes ovis, Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor reticulatus. The product is well tolerated by sheep and goats, pregnant animals included. In case of overdosage depression, disturbed gait and mydriasis may occur.
For treatment of fascioliasis; nematodiasis caused by the above mentioned parasites in small ruminants; oestrosis in sheep; Melophagus infestation in sheep; hypodermiasis in goats; scabies (mange) in sheep; invasions with pasture ticks.
