Pharmacological action:
Tobramycin has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms: Paeruginosa; Proteus spp. (indole-positive and indole-negative), including P. mirabilis, P. morganii, P. rettgeri and P. vulgaris; E. coli; Klebsiella; Enterobacter, Serratia; Citrobacter spp.; Providencia spp.; Staphylococci, including S. aureus and coagulase-negative strains.
Tobramycin is successfully used for the treatment of:
- Septicemia in newborns, children and adults, caused by P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella, and E. coli
- Pseudomonal infections of the urinary tract, the meninges and the soft tissues
- Pseudomonas septicemia and pneumonia; infection in cystic fibrosis -usually used in combination with an anti-pseudomonal penicillin
- Tobramycin has an excellent record in the treatment of mixed infections of the abdomen and gynecologic pelvis
- Bones and joints are also treated effectively with Tobramycin Tobramycin is successfully used in combination with cephalosporins or Clindamycin in the control of febrile episodes in neutropenic patients and in the prophylactics of abdominal surgeries. It has mainly a bactericidal type of action and the acquirement of resis¬tance to Tobramycin advances slowly. Combinations with Carbenicillin, Cefalothin, Cephazolin, Cefoperazon and Ceftriaxon have a confirmed synergetic effect as regards the P. aeruginosa. A strict control is necessary for a number of clinico-laboratory parameters and tests for the auditory and vestibular function. Tobramycin eye drops are successfully used in the treatment of external infections of the eyes and eyelids:
- Conjunctivitis; hordeolum; blepharitis; blepharoconjunctivitis; dacryocystitis; corneal ulcers; secondary infections in corneal ulcer and cor-neal herpes.
- For prophylactics in case of: injuries of the eye, caused by foreign bodies, pre- and post-operatively in intraocular interventions, especially in lens extraction.
