Pharmacological action:
Tobramycin has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms: P.aeruginosa; Proteus spp. (indole-positive and indole-negative), including P. mirabilis, P. morganii, P. rettgeri and P. vulgaris; E. coli; the group Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia; Citrobacter spp.; Providencia spp.; Staphylococci, including S. aureus and coagulase-negative strains. It has mainly a bactericidal type of action, and the acquirement of resistance to Tobramycin advances slowly. The combinations with carbenicillin, cephalothin, cefazolin, cefoperazon and ceftriaxon have a confirmed synergetic effect in regard of P. aeruginosa.
Tobramycin is successfully used for the treatment of:
- Septicemia in newborns, children and adults, caused by P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella, and E. coli
- Pseudomonal infections of urinary tract, meninges and soft tissues
- Pseudomonas septicemia and pneumonia and infection in cystic fibrosis - usually used in combination with anti-pseudomonal penicillin
- Tobramycin has an excellent record in the treatment of mixed infections of the abdomen and gynecologic pelvic infections
- Bone and joints are treated effectively with Tobramycin Tobramycin is successfully used in combination with cephalosporins or Clindamycin in the control of febrile episodes in neutropenic patients and in the prophylactics of the abdominal surgery. A strict control is necessary on a number of clinical laboratory param¬eters and tests for auditory and vestibular function. Tobramycin eye drops are successfully used in the treatment of external infections of the eyes and eyelids:
- Conjunctivitis; hordeolum; blepharitis; blepharoconjunctivitis; dacryocystitis; corneal ulcers; secondary infections in corneal ulcer and corneal herpes.
- For prophylactics in case of: injuries of the eye caused by alien bodies, pre- and post-operatively in intraocular interventions, especially in lens extraction.
Tobramycin is also used for preparation of Tobramycin sulphate.
